Protecting your voice from cloning: a practical guide

Your voice is part of your identity, and it has become easy to copy. Voice-cloning apps need only a few seconds of clear audio, from a video, a podcast, a voice note or even a phone call, to produce speech that sounds like you.

How cloned voices are used

• Family scams: a call or voice note in a relative's voice asking for urgent money.
• Business fraud: a fake call from an executive asking a team to make a payment or share data.
• Fake content: songs, covers, ads and messages to fans made with an artist's or creator's voice.
• Harassment: recordings of things you never said, shared to damage your reputation.

Protect your family and team

The simplest defence works best: agree on a code word or question that any genuine urgent call would include. If a call asks for money or secrecy and doesn't include it, hang up and call back on a number you know.

• Never act on urgent payment requests from a voice alone.
• Call back on a known number before doing anything.
• Tell older relatives how these scams work; they are often the first target.

Reduce what can be copied

You don't need to disappear from the internet. But be aware that long, clear recordings of your voice are the easiest to clone. Public figures, artists and creators can't avoid them, which is why watching for misuse matters more for them.

• Keep the fake: the file, the message and the number or account that sent it.
• Warn the people who might be targeted.
• We report the content and the account to the platform as impersonation.
• If money was asked for or paid, every minute counts. We take it on: report it to us and we act immediately.
